The Dome of the Rock
was completed in 691 C.E. by Caliph Abd al-Malik, half a century after the
death of the Prophet Muhammad. The rock marks the site from where Prophet
made his Night Journey into the heavens. In Jewish tradition this
is the symbolic Foundation Stone upon which the world was created, and
the place of the binding of Isaac. For Christians, the temple mount
is a site which Jesus visited as a young boy and to which he returned near the
end of this life. Thus the dome is a powerful religious symbol standing the
the place of origins for the three Abrahamic religions.
