Superman Returns

A Real Victory for Truth, Justice and the American Way!
I look forward to viewing and reviewing Superman Returns over the holiday weekend. In the meantime, an excellent op-ed in today’s New York Times points out that in early incarnations our superhero was fighting for “truth and justice.” The “American way” was added during the Cold War period, as was the “under God” piety of the pledge of Allegiance. In my mind the real victory for “the American way” came yesterday in the Supreme Court’s rejection of Bush administration tribunals at Guantanamo Bay. One huge part of the freedom that we are celebrating this weekend is the Constitution’s provision for a separation of powers that holds even “the Decider” in check.
