You've heard about adding more fruits and vegetables, along with fish and whole grains to your diet; sometimes it's not exactly clear why. This chart spells in all out, connecting each item with its benefits. Whether such definitive connections can be drawn between eating specific foods and a corresponding health benefit is questionable from the point of view of hard science. For example, eating more avocados would not be a sufficient method of controlling your blood pressure. And I would not count upon eating grapefruit as a total solution to prostate cancer. A good diet is only one dimension of a comprehensive approach to health. Do include more of these foods in your diet; don't assume that diet alone can prevent disease and guarantee immortality.
I shared this chart with a professional dietician. Here are her comments:
The statements [on the chart] are very definitive. Some are reasonable, some are a bit exaggerated. For instance, whether eating peanuts will promote weight loss depends on many factors. Avocados have lots of good fat that promote cell membrane integrity, but saying that eating avocados will make your skin smooth is bold. Take it with a grain of salt. Overall, the statements made do relate to certain healthful properties of the compounds in theses foods, but the claims are, in most cases, too strong. Not a bad guide though.

That said, it would not be a bad idea to print this chart and take it with you when you next go food shopping. (I have also developed a variation of this chart which is part of a program I am developing that brings together such information about nutrition with a form of spiritual practice that I believe will contribute to good health ... and a more fulfilling life. Why not give it a try?

What
Would Jesus Eat? Do Christian Weight Loss Programs Really Work?
The stock market may have its ups and downs,
but the Christian weight loss industry appears to be enjoying a bull market uninterrupted
since the 1950's. Books like "What Would Jesus Eat?" and "Body By God" are just
part of an emerging sub-culture of workshops, support groups, e-courses, and church
based weight loss programs that seem to be sprouting up everywhere.
